Fair Trade Fabrics

Handcrafted silk and wool products with a mixture of wild silks (eri, mooga and tussar) and naturally dyed through the extraction of pigments from available vegetation such as marigold, madder and onion skin. The golden threads you see in the shawls and scarves are eri silk which has a natural golden sheen. When spun on its own it has a unique quality. It is very light in weight, elegant and dressy. The handcrafted cotton, silk and wool products here employ fine weaving that produces a quality rendering in the finished product which supports women and women owned businesses in developing countries.

Handmade is the Best Made

These items are all hand crafted by Fair Trade businesses using eco-friendly production techniques in the manufacturing process. Some of these products originate in rural India high in the central Himalayan Mountains. Others are handcrafted on the African continent (see more fair trade african artisans' work) as well as Latin America, Indonesia, Eastern Europe and the USA. All of these items are marked so you know which ones are fair trade products. The producers take care in the production of their wares and all of the merchandise we sell is executed with market ready, high quality craftsmanship.

Care Instructions

Extremely versatile and practical pieces that are easy to care for. Please follow care instructions and your investment will remain beautiful and provide lasting enjoyment. The way the fabric is finished can offer care choices of your item. Look to the care label for each item. Handwashing in mild soap and water with line or flat drying preserves the surface texture (nap) and quality of the fabric finish. If you have any questions you can always call customer service at 1.866.828.3145 and someone can assist you. When in doubt you can dry clean however, most of the care labels suggest delicate handling using mild soap, cool water and air drying.

Cotton, Cotton/Silk Blend, Silk, Rayon, Rayon/Cotton Blend, Wool, Wool/Silk Blend:

Gentle handwashing in mild soap and cool water. Line dry or lay flat to dry. Instructions to dry clean items can be followed otherwise gentle handwashing as described above is best. Do not machine wash or machine dry any of these items. Dry all clothes and accessories out of direct sunlight. Please note slight variations in each item may occur as these products are handwoven and as such, are one-of-a-kind.
